Dichroic filters are a multi-layer deposition coating applied to borosilicate glass. Dichroic filters operate on a passive-reflective basis, reflecting unused wavelengths while passing wanted portions of the spectrum. Traditional color filters pass the wanted portions of the spectrum and absorb the unwanted colors. Dichroics are high in transmission and are best for dark saturated colors. Continuous operating temperature is 200°C.

FX does not recommend using straight dichroics on flood or fresnel type fixtures. Dichroic filters have the characteristic of shifting color because the wavelength of light selected by the filter varies with the angle of incidence of the light. This phenomenon is known as 'halation' or 'off-axis' color. Dichroics also have the characteristic of not matching a specified color. Although FX renders (matches with the human eye) each piece and color, all Dichroics are supplied as a 'best effort match'.

FX Dichro-X lenses feature dichroic glass in the center field of the beam, producing a nearly identical transmission at a great cost saving. Dichroic halation can be controlled or eliminated using FX Dichro-X Lenses.

Straight dichroics work best on narrow beam high powered spotlights. Shown above an FX/NORTHSTAR snoot with a dichroic lens, bonded to tempered glass for added strength and weatherability, on a NORTHSTAR CSI 1,000 watt fixture
